Character Creation
Character Creation in Fated consists of the following components, each of which are detailed further down the page:
- OC information: Inform the GMs (and eventually your fellow players) about your name and pronouns. In addition you will need to supply an email address. If you are under 18 you will need to alert the GMs for safeguarding reasons (this information will not be shared, as per our Privacy Policy).
- IC name(s) and pronouns: Select a name for your character. Please also tell us your character's pronouns.
- Character Questionnaire: Answer some questions on what fate means to your character and their acquisition of their invitation to the Palace.
- Quirks: You may choose any number of quirks so long as their total score comes to -1, 0 or 1. You may choose any number of playstyle quirks. See the Quirks page for more information about the quirks you can take.
- Public Bio: A bio that will be published on the Player Characters page on this wiki, visible to all players.
- Private Bio: A bio of your character visible only to you and the GMs.
- OC Notes to GMs: A message to the GMs, primarily to inform them how they can make the game more comfortable or accessible for you. Anything that is not covered in the rest of the form should go here.
Here are some sample characters to serve as inspiration!
Name and Pronouns
While Fated is set in a medieval-fantasy world, names and pronouns can be modern and diverse. Any name, medieval, modern, or otherwise is suitable. In addition, please tell us your character's IC pronouns, so that we and other players know how to refer to them. These will be visible beside your character's name on the wiki.
Character Questionnaire
The character questionnaire consists of the following questions detailed below:
- What is your character's fate? How do they know this?
- A fate is something that is destined to happen at some point in a person’s life. Everyone has a fate. Some people claim to be able to discern the fates of others. Though most organisations hold that their particular way is the best, the methods by which a fate might be gleaned are countless, if not all of the same level of repute. Fates are often discerned with differing levels of accuracy. As a result, it is possible that your character has an impression of their fate that you as a player know is inaccurate in some way. If this is the case, please let us know the fate your character believes they have, and where this differs from your OC knowledge. While your character may not know their fate, we ask that you, OC, have some idea of what this is. If you wish to be surprised, you can have the fate that you know your character has be vague.
- If your character has a manifestation, what does it look like?
- In the world of Fated all players are human. However, at a young age, most people experience unique changes to their physical appearance. These changes are called manifestations. It is generally accepted that the form a manifestation takes reflects some aspect of a person's fate. Manifestations range from imperceptibly subtle to entirely obvious. For example, your character might have eyes that faintly reflect shadow instead of light, joints that hinge like those of a doll, or hair that appears to be made of snakes.
- Does your character believe their fate has already occurred?
- If so, why?
- How does your character feel about their fate? What, if anything, are they doing about it?
- In the world of Fated, fates are often unfair. One person may love their fate and yearn for it to happen, while another may dread it. Where does your character sit on this scale? Are they working towards completing their fate? Or are they trying to circumvent it? If your character believes their fate has already occurred, how did they feel about it beforehand, and how do they feel about its completion now?
- Your character has an invitation to the Palace to elect a new Fate. How did they acquire it?
- An invitation may have made it to your character in a variety of ways, ranging wildly in legality and specificity. Was the letter your invitation simply addressed to your community or was it addressed directly to you? Did it arrive by post, or did it appear in a more expected place? Did you find it? Alternatively did you steal it from someone else?
- Why has your character accepted their invitation to the Palace?
- The position of Fate is a powerful one—is your character here to run for it? Or are they here to get in the good graces of the future Fate? Or maybe your character is here for more personal reasons. Is there something you want in the Palace that you don't think you can get anywhere else? Is voting in the election of a new Fate simply too rare of an opportunity to give up? Or is it something else?
Bio
Please submit a public bio; this will be visible to all players on the Player Characters page. This public bio may include information that is common knowledge about your character, or how others might perceive them at first glance. This can include, but is not limited to, descriptions of their personality, occupation, and appearance. If your character has an obvious manifestation, you may want to reference it here.
Please also submit a personal bio. This will be visible only to you and the GMs. This includes information that you do not want other players to know about. What are your characters motivations? Where are they from? What is their backstory? How has this shaped them?
Quirks
Quirks define your interactions as a player with the world of Fated on a mechanical level. They help to shape both your character and your experience as a player. There are two types of Quirks in Fated: Gameplay and Playstyle.
- Gameplay Quirks reflect aspects of your character and their history, giving them specific mechanical advantages and disadvantages. Gameplay quirks have assigned values. In Fated there are two types of Gameplay Quirks: Social and Physical. You can have a total of 6 quirks in total, as long as they add up to -1, 0, +1. You can take a maximum of 4 social or physical quirks. You can take each social quirk up to twice, but you can only take each physical quirk once.
- Playstyle Quirks communicate the content and themes that you're comfortable with, thereby tailoring the way the GMs interact with your character. You may also take any number of Quirks from this section. These Quirks do not have assigned values.
For more information, please see Quirks.
OC Notes to GMs
This section is for anything not already covered by the form. Please let us know any concerns about accessibility, comfort, areas of the game you'd rather avoid or anything else.
