It is the end of an age, dear elector. Our Lady the Weaver is deceased. Thus, the Palace of Fate cordially invites you to appoint a successor. Follow the brambles, and you shall know the way.

Welcome

Welcome to Fated, one of the two ORPGsoc Society Games for Trinity term 2025.

Fated is a game set within the confines of a fairytale palace, where players will navigate a shifting web of alliances and deeper mysteries as they attempt to elect somebody to Fate's throne. All characters have a fate: a predestined event or direction in their lives. Characters must contend with this as they explore their reasons for entering the Palace; what answers they will seek within its walls; and their shifting views on what sort of person should wield power over fates. Besides, the Palace is a strange environment—and that fate might catch up with them…

Fated will run on Tuesday evenings for the duration of term. For more details, see When and Where.

Getting Started

If you are new to Society Games, or to roleplaying in general, Intro to the Wiki System, Uptimes & Sessions and Downtimes & Turnsheets may be useful reads.

To get an idea of the game's tone and central themes, see Style and Tone and Play This If.... To be sure which themes are allowable within Fated, please read our Conduct and Acceptable Themes Policy.

To learn more about the game's setting, see the pages in the Setting section of the sidebar, especially Fates Overview and The Palace. Information about the wider world, to inspire character origins, is navigable from the Nations list, but you can engage with this game element as much or as little as you wish. You do not need to remember everything from the Setting pages!

For information on accessibility, including how to change the Wiki theme to 'readable', please see Accessibility.

And finally, if you wish to participate in the game, please see Character Creation. There will be an optional Character Creation event on Tuesday Week 1 (29th April) at Brasenose College, but you can also get help and ideas via our Discord server.

Balloting

In order to be able to run a high quality game and maintain a healthy work-life balance, if more than 24 players express interest in Fated we will be forced to ballot. The ballot will be done in combination with Scoop!, so that not having a place in one game makes you more likely to have a place in the other (and choosing to enter for only one game does not hurt your chances). In the event of balloting, we will admit groups in a certain order until we reach a group which will take us over the player cap, at which point that group will be balloted for places. Subsequent groups will not be balloted and will not get places as players.

The priority groups are as follows:

  1. Special cases (largely reserved for room-bookers and other extraordinary circumstances)
  2. Those balloting preferentially for Fated
    • {a} Oxford University students for whom this is their last possible Society Game
    • {b} Oxford University students who have not played a Society Game before
    • {c} Oxford University students who have played a Society Game before
    • {d} Non-Oxford University Students
  3. Those balloting preferentially for Scoop!
    • {a} Oxford University students for whom this is their last possible Society Game
    • {b} Oxford University students who have not played a Society Game before
    • {c} Oxford University students who have played a Society Game before
    • {d} Non-Oxford University Students

If somebody ballots with no preference, they will be entered into the ballot with the people who balloted for both games preferentially. Should this person then get into both games, they will be asked to withdraw from one, and that place given to somebody from the waitlist.

Please also note that, while the ballot form is a joint exercise, the character creation forms are conducted separately, and here the two games differ in timing.

The ballot can be found here and closes at 12:00 (noon) on Thursday 24th April.
